Cox bills to crawl in March

Cox Communications provides nudge up prices for Internet access and cable television, next month to cover rising operating costs and wage costs have increased since Hurricane Katrina.

Cox customer in Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard and St. Charles municipalities pay $ 3 more per month for standard service and an additional $ for digital channels from next month.

The costs for most high-speed Internet access increasing as well, $ 2 or $ 3 per month. Cox telephone tariffs are not affected by the changes.

Programming costs, fees to pay Cox for the right to television shows, grew by 24 percent over the past three years, “said Steve Sawyer, Cox, Vice President of New Orleans. Pending spectators saw an increase of only 6 per cent in its cable bills in the last four years.

“We take a large portion of the costs for the most part, but in the meantime, we asked to increase rates in order to pass some of these costs to our customers,” he said.

Cox officials point out that improvements to the cable system have accompanied the rate increase. The company has two dozen television channels over the past two years and offers fast Internet speeds as good.

Last year, Cox has $ 500 million for reconstruction and development of infrastructure of cable around the region, including areas that are not quickly repopulated.

Cox months repair and replacement of fiber optic cables, routers and son Overhead network, but had to say, followed by shortages of equipment and construction crews moving up recently damaged.

Once the network was fully operational, but Cox’s reconstruction work meant that people in areas such as New Orleans East, 9 and Ward St. Bernard Parish get the telephone, cable and Internet service in their Federal Emergency Management Agency trailers.

Only 77 per cent of customers were again the four communes, New Orleans, Cox said Ellen Lloyd, the company Vice President of Marketing.

With fewer households with Cox, New Orleans is expected to generate $ 1.8 million this year, a franchise tax, it brings together cable customers, half of the $ 3.9 million of the city during the year 2004. Others collect franchise fees in the amount of 5 per cent of the clientele.

Cox is shy of 20 per cent of its workforce before Katrina, particularly in the Customer Service and workers of the area. That is to say, Cox may have to pay more entrepreneurs to manage the facilities and repair work, said Sawyer. Add to that rising fuel costs, insurance business and other expenses, Sawyer said, “we have higher costs for a system much smaller.
