3 men are charged with murder in New Orleans Anti-Gay Attack

Three men were charged, and stechenden beat two men, one fatal, while shouting anti-gays epithets in the French Quarter.

The victim, Joe Balog, 22, Gulfport, Miss, was chased, beaten and deadly covered-November 11, he and a friend in his car in the morning after visiting several bars. Mr. Balog’s friend, whose identity was not released, was seriously injured.

Thursday, the three suspects, Wayne Gunderson Grant and Ronald D. Graves, both 24, and Mingo Graham, 23, all of the New Orleans suburb of Metairie, with murder. They were imprisoned without commitment and without date of the consultation was planned.

The gay rights advocates here say the attack is the latest in a series of incidents of harassment and attacks against homosexuals in the French Quarter. The false signals

“In the past, it was just harassment, but it became worse in recent years,” said Lin-Soldani death, a marriage between homosexuals and the Police Department. “I think it is always the signal by the Government on the fact that homosexuals second-class citizens, and it is OK to treat them in any way.”

Mr. Soldani, mistakenly believed the attacker, M. Balog and his friend were homosexuals. It is estimated that over 50 per cent of men on the streets of the French Quarter late at night are gays.

While homosexuals believe that crimes against them, police said here increases, it is difficult to say because the separation of crimes motivated by hatred and attacks against other criminal acts is often difficult. In addition, homosexuals are sometimes reluctant to report crimes against them.

Bryan Sanchez, 22-year university student, he said, and was taunted by a group of six well-dressed young men in the French Quarter exactly one year before the attack on Mr. Balog. Mr. Sanchez, is gay, suffered a broken eardrum in the attack.

“Finally, they all met and me, it was above me ask me my name and call for things,” said Sanchez. “It was frightening, and it has not happened for other reasons, they wanted someone was injured, homosexual.”

Mr. Soldani said a hostile attitude towards homosexuals was reinforced by the reversal of a city decision on the extension of health insurance national partnership of gay city workers.
